Aussie relay team upstage Dutch and Americans to win gold medal
THE four women who powered themselves and Australia to the nation's first gold medal in London, didn't even realise they had won in Olympic record time until they were told by TV commentator Grant Hckett on the pool deck.
The 4x100m relay team of Alicia Coutts, Cate Campbell, Brittany Elmslie and Melanie Schlanger upstaged reigning champion the Netherlands, overtook the US and set an Olympic record 3min 33.15sec.
It was a perfect race from the quartet, with Coutts (53.90sec) starting and placing the team third, Campbell (53.10) moving to second and Elmsie hitting the lead with her 53.14 effort.
It was up to Schlanger, who kept the lead with the team's fastest leg of 52.65, to hold off the blistering finish of Dutchwoman Ranomi Kromodwidjojo who steamed home in 51.93 to ensure the Netherlands took silver and the US bronze.
